Unlike moving your vehicle within the US, Puerto Rico auto transport has some requirements. These are more stringent when a vehicle is leaving the island than when bringing one in. Requirements

In this section you will find everything you need to know to assure that this goes for you as smoothly and that there are no surprises.

Whether you are importing or exporting from Puerto Rico, you must have no more than a quarter tank of fuel in the vehicle. This is to manage the weight of the vehicles on the ship. If your vehicle has more than that he could be rejected.

The vehicle must be completely empty of all items when shipping to or from the island. The only loose items allowed are factory hardware such as tool kits and wheel locks. Aftermarket equipment such as amplifiers or other wiring must be secured to the vehicle and not loose.  Other loose items that would normally belong in the car but are not bolted in such as radar detectors, toll equipment (Sunpass, EZPass, SpeedPass) must be removed.

Specific Requirements for Puerto Rico Auto Transport to the Island

 

  1. Your vehicle(s) need to be completely cleaned. No items can be in the vehicle. Factory hardware such as tool kits and wheel locks are ok.
  2. Remove the license plate and return it to your local motor vehicle office.
  3. Please do not have more than a  1/4 tank of gas upon drop off or your vehicle may be held from boarding.
  4. Please have a copy of the registration or the title in the vehicle.
  5. f you are not the owner of the vehicle and a different person is receiving it, an Absentee Owner Authorization must be submitted to allow the vehicle to be dropped off.
  6. Although PR is considered a U.S. territory, it is still necessary to have lender permission to move the vehicle. Please have a letter from the bank if the car has a l.
  7. Vehicle must be running to load and unload.(If vehicle becomes stops running after being boarded, an additional $150.00 could be assessed but we do not charge this if it’s a dead battery and vehicle can be jump started.)
  8. No windshield damage or cracks, please.

 

If You Are Shipping a Car FROM Puerto Rico

 

  1. Your vehicle(s) need to be completely cleaned. No items can be in the vehicle.Factory hardware such as tool kits and wheel locks are ok to include. Radar detectors, loose equipment is not allowed.
  2. If you are not the owner of the vehicle, an original Power of Attorney certified by a lawyer with copy of the owner’s ID authorizing the shipment. This must be submitted to allow the vehicle to be dropped off.
  3. Remove the license plate and return it to your local motor vehicle office.
  4. Please do not have more than a  1/4 tank of gas upon drop off or your vehicle may be held from boarding.
  5. Please have a copy of the registration or the title in the vehicle.
  6. Vehicles with bank loans will need  lender permission. Please have a letter from the bank if the car has a loan.
  7. Vehicle must be running to load and unload. (If vehicle becomes stops running after being boarded, an additional $150.00 could be assessed but we do not charge this if it’s a dead battery and vehicle can be jump started.)
  8. No windshield damage or cracks, please.
  9. Certificate of “no debts” with ACAA. This one actually lasts 30 days.
  10. Your vehicle needs to be brought in and inspected by the Division of Stolen Vehicles at the Puerto Rico Police Department. That inspection expires after 5 days including the day it was done.
  11. There is a  $10.00 export voucher “comprobante” that you will need from the  Puerto Rico Internal Revenue Department “Colecturía”.
  12. Certificate stating “No Fines” due with $1.50 stamp from the Puerto Rico department of motor vehicles (Departamento de Transportación y Obras Públicas) IMPORTANT – It will only be valid for 3 days including date issued!
  13. You will need a receipt of car wash, that will describe how it was cleaned. It will say  the vehicle was cleaned on the outside as well as under the vehicle and the engine area.

 

 

Planning Ahead

 

It is important to know when you want your vehicle to arrive. Depending on how much land travel there is between your door and the port as well as the sailing schedule will determine the total amount travel time.  On average please count on a two week window for all arrangements to come through.
